About Art in Motion

Art in Motion Dance Education is a Calgary business dedicated to sharing the joy of moving. We offer embodied learning programs that focus on physical and mental health to Calgary-area schools. All classes are rooted in brain-based dance education with attention to the role of self-expression.

AIM offers positive and inclusive programming, that fosters creativity while building movement skills. We recognize the innate joy in movement and create a class culture where this is encouraged and celebrated. Students have opportunities to explore their creative voice and find success throughout AIM dance experiences.

Art in Motion is listed on the CBE artist roster and as a vendor with the CCSD.

Jennifer Mahood works with movement-based processes across artistic, educational and therapeutic settings. She teaches and facilitates classes for children, adults, and dance professionals in Calgary. Holding an MFA in Contemporary Dance Creation and Performance and an Expressive Movement Facilitator certificate, Mahood has cultivated her own style of process facilitation through her 25+ years in the field of dance and movement. In addition to teaching and facilitating, her professional artistic endeavours have been presented locally and internationally. Mahood’s work is centred around the scientifically supported benefits of movement in brain development and well-being and is rooted in the joy of moving with others.

Owner-Artist-Facilitator: Jennifer Mahood

Mahood's own dance education has led her to travel the world. She has studied West-African dance with Master Artists in Canada, the United States and West Africa. In addition to earning her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees in Contemporary Dance, Mahood studied Contemporary dance in Canada, the United States, Poland, and Finland. Her professional choreography has been seen in Canada, the United States and Poland.

In 2011, Mahood was introduced to Arts-Centred Learning through her Artist-in-Residence position at Calgary Arts Academy, a charter school committed to teaching through arts immersion. At this innovative school, she developed her passion for arts-centred learning, working alongside teachers and artists delivering Alberta Curriculum through artistic practice. Through this experience, Mahood witnessed the power of dance and art transform students' educational experience.

In 2021, Jennifer began developing her interest in dance and movement for therapeutic processes. Through this passion, Mahood became a certified Rhythm Works Instructor, offering dance and movement experiences to children with developmental delays, physical challenges, learning differences and sensorial sensitivities. Most recently, Mahood completed a 200 hr. Expressive Movement Facilitator program exploring developmental, physical, social-emotional, and relational embodiment processes through dance and movement. Jennifer is thrilled to incorporate this work into her school-based and community-based offerings.

Jennifer loves sharing her passion for dance and movement with others and is thankful to work in a field that fills her heart and brings her joy.
