About Art in Motion
Art in Motion Dance Education is a Calgary business dedicated to sharing the joy of moving. We offer classes, workshops and dance residencies in Calgary-area schools. All classes are rooted in brain-based dance education with attention to the role of self-expression.
AIM offers positive and inclusive programming, that fosters creativity while building movement skills. We recognize the innate joy in movement that we were all born with, and we create a class culture where this is encouraged and celebrated. Movers have opportunities to explore their creative voice, and find successes throughout AIM dance experiences.
Our staff are very approachable and enthusiastic! Each instructor holds a degree in dance ensuring a depth of knowledge not only in movement, but the moving body as well. All have several years of experience, and are mentored in Arts-Centred Learning by owner Jennifer Mahood.
Art in Motion is listed on the CBE artist roster.
AIM owner, artist and instructor, Jennifer Mahood is a professional dance artist and dance education specialist operating in the Calgary area. She's been teaching dance for over 20 years to students of all ages and experiences, and has 10 years of experience specifically teaching dance and movement in schools. Mahood has taught a variety of dance forms, but specializes in West-African, Creative, and Contemporary dance, in addition to Arts-Centred Learning.
Mahood's own dance education has led her to travel the world. She has studied West-African dance with Master Artists in Canada, the United States and West Africa. In addition to earning her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees in Contemporary Dance, Mahood studied Contemporary dance in Canada, the United States, Poland, and Finland.
Her professional choreography has been seen in Canada, the United States and Poland. In 2011, Mahood was introduced to Arts-Centred Learning through her Artist-in-Residence position at Calgary Arts Academy, a charter school committed to teaching through arts immersion. At this innovative school she developed her passion for arts-centred learning, working alongside teachers and artists delivering Alberta Curriculum through artistic practice. Through this experience, Mahood witnessed the power of dance and art transform students' educational experience. Most recently, Jennifer has become a certified Rhythm Works Instructor, offering dance and movement experiences to children with developmental delays, physical challenges, learning differences and sensorial sensitivities. She is currently exploring therapeutic dance processes by pursuing an Expressive Movement Facilitator certification through The Movement Arc in Vancouver.
Jennifer loves sharing her passion for dance and movement with students, and is thankful to work in a field that fills her heart and brings her joy.
